West Parry Sound Health Centre (WPSHC) is a highly integrated health care organization that includes six remote primary care Nurse Practitioner Led Clinics, management of district land ambulance services and dispatch, and a full range of in-patient and out-patient programs associated with a 70-bed acute care hospital. WPSHC serves one of Ontario’s most popular recreational areas with an approximate year-round population of 24,000 and approaching 100,000 during the peak summer season. WPSHC offers a full range of orthopaedic and general surgery; full-time emergency department; diagnostic imaging including CT; full-time on-site medical laboratory; satellite chemotherapy services. The Health Centre annually admits approximately 2,220 patients, performs 3,000 surgeries and 21,000 emergency department visits.

About the Opportunity

The West Parry Sound Health Centre currently has an opening for a Physician Assistant in our Emergency Department.

Responsibilities include working as a member of the Emergency Department team under the supervision of the Emergency Department Physicians. The role will include patient interactions in order to complete assessments, obtain patient histories and support the delivery of emergency care services. Responsibilities will include patient assessment, treatment planning in accordance with medical directives, patient teaching, ongoing monitoring of patient condition, documentation, and participation in patient care planning. The incumbent will work closely with Emergency Physicians, nursing staff, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, discharge planning and social work services to support the delivery of high-quality emergency care. Opportunities may exist for collaboration with other clinical services as required within the Emergency Department environment. Primary Supervising Physician will be the Chief of Emergency Medicine or designate.

More About You

To qualify for the role, you will need to have:

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant education program;
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) as a Physician Assistant;
  • Certified through the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) for American educated/trained PAs;
  • Current BCLS, ACLS, PALS certification and NALS certification is preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in both verbal and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines;
  • Demonstrated competency to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives.
